LoveEast discovers breathtaking young talent at the Well Street Market live stage
Last Saturday saw Brit Award winners Rudimental support local up-and-coming talent by offering music mentoring as part of Well Street Market’s Discover Young Hackney event. The takeover of the market’s live stage was a huge success. The event showcased local young singers, MCs and performance poets, as well as musicians and spoken-word acts. Amir and Leo from Rudimental and singer Anne Marie said “it was inspiring to see such a great project in action”.
Local singers Cai, Nesah Gonzales and Amaria Braithwaite brought crowds to the street and many were moved to tears at seeing such young talent. Chifa K and 12 year old “Tofi”, winners of Alter Ego, Hackney Empire’s No 1 talent show, took the audience’s breath away. Tofi’s performance of his poem Anything, composed when he was just ten, was incredible.“We want to promote and nurture our fantastic local talent, says Kay Richardson, the market’s project manager. “Our ethos has always been ‘our stage is your stage’ and we want to encourage the local community to take ownership of the stage and bring communities together. We are hoping to create a music mentoring Monday programme based at Hackney Quest from September to further develop local talent.”
Saturday’s event was opened by Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville, who described the performers as “incredible”.
Saturday’s event also signalled the start of market going weekly, so residents will be able to enjoy Well Street Market every Saturday from now on.The live stage which was opened by Norman Jay, MBE, is a platform for locals and established acts to use, and has successfully brought together people from different ages and diverse backgrounds. It also provides free stalls to teenagers and student makers, as well as providing them with training. It is a community enterprise in the truest sense.
It’s now seven months since the successful crowdfunding campaign by Well Street Traders and Residents Association (WESTRA), and Well Street Market continues to go from strength to strength. It has been backed by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who pledged his support for the project. Residents were pleased to see his support in action when he came to speak at the launch in December.
